They announced the wrong winner for Best Picture at the Oscars!
Update: Explainer: The double envelope mix up that led to that Best Picture mess
SO, IT HAPPENED.
They announced the wrong winner for Best Picture.
Let’s go back to the beginning.
Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were tasked with presenting Best Picture.
Well, they are legends.
After watching clips from the nominated films, Warren Beatty opened the envelope and spent a moment studying it.
After a bit of faffing around, Faye Dunaway announced that La La Land had won Best Picture.

Soon the entire cast and crew were on stage, giving speeches and rejoicing in their victory.
But then Jordan Horowitz, the producer of La La Land, realised that Warren Beatty had made a horrible mistake. La La Land didn’t win Best Picture – Moonlight did.

As you can imagine, everyone was deeply confused. Was this some sort of elaborate prank? How did Warren Beatty misread Moonlight as La La Land?
Warren Beatty attempted to explain the error.
The rightful winners eventually made their way onto the stage, their big moment forever sullied by Warren Beatty.

Everyone at home was like, “?!?!??!?!??”
Not only was it a dramatic reveal, but it was also a gigantic upset. La La Land had been widely considered the frontrunner having won many of the precursor awards.
While Moonlight was considered to be its closest rival, few actually gave it a shot at winning. Many lamented that the win would be forever overshadowed by a gigantic mistake.
